FINANCE MINISTRY APPROVES TUNNEL PROJECT IN SOUTH BALI

THE BALI SUN * JANUARY 13, 2021

A construction project proposed by Badung Regency has been approved by the Indonesian Finance Ministry.

The project includes the development of an outer ring road and limestone tunnel in South Bali.

A meeting held by the Badung Regional Secretary on Monday (11/1) was attended by the Badung Public Works Agency.

Head of the Agency, Ida Bagus Surya Suamba said that he had conducted a survey to find that tunnels should be built on limestone soil as it is more stable than clay.

This concept would also be more feasible as most ground in South Bali is laid in limestone.

The Agency was inspired by construction projects recently developed in Hongkong, which enhanced tourism activity through developing various tunnels.

“Just like in Hongkong, where they created tunnels by drilling the stone,” said Suamba.

The project aims to create better connectivity between tourist sites in South Bali.

The Regional Secretary, Adi Arnawa said that tunnels should be developed alongside popular accommodation businesses to increase economic activity within the area.

“The land acquisition will begin in 2022, so we expect to see the result in 2024” Suamba concluded.

The Regent of Badung District, I Nyoman Giri Prasta has committed to follow instructions from the Indonesian Finance Ministry.

“The development will start in Benoa, Kutuh, Pecatu and Jimbaran. The tunnel will be equipped with oxygen supply. For the regular road, we will provide a rest area so nearby residents could open up some stalls” Giri Prasta concluded.

He also plans to establish a partnership with Angkasa Pura Ltd to develop MRT in the future, in order to solve traffic congestion in Badung.
